We’ve all heard the news: bees are disappearing.
Many of us have seen and heard the evidence for ourselves.
My parents’ backyard garden used to be full of bees every spring and summer,
now, it’s mostly silent.
But why are bees disappearing,
and what happens if they one day vanish for good?

우리 중 많은 사람들이 직접 증거를 보고 들었습니다.
매년 봄 여름이면 부모님 마당에 벌이 가득했는데 지금은 거의 조용합니다.
하지만 꿀벌이 사라지는 이유는 무엇이며,
언젠가 영원히 사라진다면 무슨 일이 일어날까요?

지난 20년 동안 프랑스의 꿀 생산량은 절반으로 줄었습니다.
Although cereal grains are wind-pollinated,
most produce requires insect pollination, from bees in particular.
The diversity of fresh produce and agriculture as a whole would also rapidly decline
— almonds, apples, blueberries, broccoli, cherries, chocolate, coffee, cranberries, and melons are only a few plants we eat that need bee pollination.
Human nutrition and food security would basically collapse without them.
곡물은 바람에 의해 수분되지만 대부분의 농산물에는 특히 꿀벌의 곤충 수분이 필요합니다.
신선한 농산물과 농업 전체의 다양성 또한 급격히 감소할 것입니다.
아몬드, 사과, 블루베리, 브로콜리, 체리, 초콜릿, 커피, 크랜베리, 멜론은 꿀벌 수분이 필요한 몇 안 되는 식물입니다. 인간의 영양과 식량 안보는 기본적으로 그것이 없으면 무너질 것입니다.
Increasingly each spring, beekeepers open their hives to find entire colonies wiped out.
And beekeepers aren't the only ones who are worried.
Bees pollinate at least a third of the world's crops.
If the dramatic decline in worldwide bee populations continues,
essential food crops could disappear, along with entire ecosystems.
매년 봄 양봉가들은 벌통을 열어 전체 개체가 사라진 것을 발견합니다.
그리고 양봉가들만이 걱정하는 것은 아닙니다.
꿀벌은 세계 작물의 최소 3분의 1을 수분시킵니다.
전 세계적으로 꿀벌 개체수가 급격히 감소하면
필수 식량 작물과 전체 생태계가 사라질 수 있습니다.
