The Po is the longest river in Italy.

After months without heavy rainfall, northern Italy is battling its worst drought since 1952. The Po River, the longest in Italy, is hitting record low water levels.

¸î ´Þ µ¿¾È Æø¿ì°¡ ³»¸®Áö ¾ÊÀº ÀÌÅ»¸®¾Æ ºÏºÎ´Â 1952³â ÀÌ·¡ ÃÖ¾ÇÀÇ °¡¹³°ú ¾¾¸§Çϰí ÀÖ½À´Ï´Ù. ÀÌÅ»¸®¾Æ¿¡¼­ °¡Àå ±ä Æ÷ °­Àº ±â·ÏÀûÀÎ ³·Àº ¼öÀ§¸¦ ±â·ÏÇϰí ÀÖ½À´Ï´Ù.

 

Stretching from the Alps in the northwest to the Adriatic Sea on the east coast, the vast waterway is a vital source of water for several regions. It is used for drinking water, irrigating crops and producing hydroelectric power across northern Italy.

In other areas, the water level dropped so low that the remains of a tank from WWII were revealed and the ruined walls of a medieval town emerged.

A vital water source is at risk

Italy¡¯s Po River flows some 650km from the snowy Alps in the northwest to the wild Po Delta in the east before rushing out into the Adriatic Sea.

ÀÌÅ»¸®¾ÆÀÇ Æ÷ °­Àº ºÏ¼­ÂÊÀÇ ´« µ¤ÀÎ ¾ËÇÁ½º¿¡¼­ µ¿ÂÊÀÇ ¾ß»ý Æ÷ µ¨Å¸±îÁö ¾à 650km¸¦ È帣´Ù°¡ ¾Æµå¸®¾Æ ÇØ·Î µ¹ÁøÇÕ´Ï´Ù.

 

During its course, the great waterway nourishes the expansive fertile plains of northern Italy where farmers have thrived for generations. Dubbed Italy¡¯s breadbasket, these flatlands covered with crops are responsible for some 40 per cent of Italy's GDP.

At the moment, however, the normally life-giving waters of the Po River have suddenly become an unexpected threat. The dramatically low water levels of the river have been causing seawater to be sucked back upstream.

Normally it should rain once every one or two weeks but now it hasn¡¯t rained for three months.
