명사는 문장에서 사람, 사물, 장소, 개념 등을 나타내는 단어로, 영어 학습의 기본적인 요소입니다. 

명사는 문장의 주어, 목적어, 보어 등으로 다양하게 활용되며, 그 종류와 용법이 매우 광범위합니다. 

이번 포스트에서는 명사의 종류, 용법, 명사 활용법 등을 체계적으로 정리해 보겠습니다.

1. 명사의 종류 (Types of Nouns)

명사는 여러 가지 기준에 따라 분류됩니다. 

가장 기본적인 구분법은 고유 명사와 보통 명사이며, 이 외에도 다양한 분류가 있습니다.

1) 고유 명사 (Proper Nouns) vs. 보통 명사 (Common Nouns)

고유 명사: 특정한 사람, 장소, 사물 등을 지칭하며, 

첫 글자는 항상 대문자로 씁니다.

예시:

사람 이름: James, Emily, Shakespeare

도시/국가: Seoul, France, Mount Everest

브랜드: Nike, Apple, Samsung

보통 명사: 특정한 대상을 지칭하지 않고 일반적인 사람, 사물, 개념 등을 나타냅니다.

예시:

사람: teacher, student, doctor

사물: book, table, computer

장소: school, park, restaurant

2) 셀 수 있는 명사 (Countable Nouns) vs. 셀 수 없는 명사 (Uncountable Nouns)

셀 수 있는 명사 (Countable Nouns): 개수를 셀 수 있으며, 단수와 복수 형태를 가집니다. 

예시:

apple → apples, car → cars, dog → dogs

There is an apple on the table.

I have two dogs.

셀 수 없는 명사 (Uncountable Nouns): 개별적으로 셀 수 없으며, 단수형으로만 사용됩니다. 예시:

물질명사: water, milk, rice, sugar

추상명사: happiness, love, information, advice

👉 셀 수 없는 명사는 보통 a/an을 붙일 수 없고, 

수량 표현을 할 때 ‘some, much, a lot of’ 등의 표현을 사용합니다.

3) 구체 명사 (Concrete Nouns) vs. 추상 명사 (Abstract Nouns)

구체 명사 (Concrete Nouns): 감각(시각, 청각, 촉각, 미각, 후각)으로 인식할 수 있는 대상.

추상 명사 (Abstract Nouns): 감각적으로 인식할 수 없는 개념적 명사.

4) 집합 명사 (Collective Nouns)

집단을 나타내는 명사로, 단수형이지만 구성원 개체를 의미하기도 합니다.

예시:

My family are all coming for dinner. (구성원 개개인을 강조할 때 복수 취급 가능)

2. 명사의 문장 속 역할 (Functions of Nouns)

명사는 문장에서 다양한 역할을 합니다.

1) 주어 (Subject)

문장에서 동작의 주체가 됩니다. 예시:

The cat is sleeping on the sofa. (고양이가 소파에서 자고 있다.)

Honesty is the best policy. (정직이 최선의 정책이다.)

2) 목적어 (Object)

동사 또는 전치사의 목적어 역할을 합니다.

3. 명사의 활용 (Noun Usage)

1) 명사의 복수형 (Plural Forms of Nouns)

명사의 복수형은 기본적으로 -s를 붙여 만듭니다.

cat → cats, book → books, pen → pens

그러나 다음과 같은 예외가 있습니다.

-s, -sh, -ch, -x, -o로 끝나는 명사: -es 추가

bus → buses, watch → watches, box → boxes

자음 + y로 끝나는 명사: y → i + es
