The U.S. State Department has stressed again that Japan's trafficking of women for sexual purposes during World War 2 was a serious violation of human rights.
In a written response to Seoul-based Yonhap News Agency on Thursday, a department official called Japan's wartime sex crimes an "egregious violation of human rights" countering a recent controversial claim by a Harvard professor.
The official said the U.S. is closely following developments in relations between their two close allies in Northeast Asia.
The source added Washington has long encouraged Seoul and Tokyo to work together for healing and reconciliation, stressing the importance of the trilateral relationship.
