    ¹ÙÀÌ¿À ÇØÄ¿ - Brian Johnson

Bryan Johnson: meet the man who is ageing backwards

Born in Provo, Utah, Johnson was just 20 when he founded his first company Braintree — specialising in mobile and web payment systems for e-commerce companies  — in 2007.

By 2013, Braintree had been acquired by PayPal for $800 million, leaving him a very rich man.

He got married, had three children and got divorced. He climbed mountains (Kilimanjaro). Ultimately, though, he spent much of the last decade overeating, drinking too much and dealing with a dark depression.

He was determined to do something about it, so used his expertise to develop algorithms that would do a better job of defining how he would live. After much tweaking — tweaking that still continues — he arrived at a routine that involves getting up at 4.30am, eating all his meals before 11am and going to bed at 8.30pm. During the day he takes more than 100 pills, exercises and is constantly monitored by the team of doctors.

The biohacker and entrepreneur, 45, says he used to overeat carbs late at night but now avoids refined sugars. He says his $2 million-a-year antiaging program, known as Project Blueprint, has reversed his "biological age," giving him the heart of a 37-year-old and the lung capacity of an 18-year-old.

On being an adult working in tech, Johnson said: "I kind of destroyed myself, body and mind, for 20 years." He said it pained him to think about his former lifestyle and the fact he had severe depression.

In a 2020 post on Medium, Johnson wrote that he used to live very differently from the way he does now, gaining 50 pounds over 10 years and being full of "relentless shame, guilt, and malaise."

It was after selling his company Braintree for $800 million and getting a divorce when Johnson started to change his lifestyle in 2019, losing 60 pounds in a year, he said.

For Johnson, this entails eating his last meal at 11 a.m., always sleeping alone, and taking more than 100 supplements a day, among many other radical choices. He also subjects himself to a vast array of tests and experiments: blood plasma transfusions, microneedling, full-body LED exposure, and MRI scans to name a few.

For Johnson there are a raft of benefits to the protocol:

Of course, that¡¯s all well and good for Johnson. But what about the billions of other people on the planet who don¡¯t have a fortune to call upon to try to save a loved one—or themselves—from aging?

Johnson said the essence of his motivation isn¡¯t for him alone, or even for his family: ¡°We scoured all the scientific literature and we put it all in me, we shared all of my data and then we made the entire thing for free.¡±

Johnson was clear his work is not a competition, but rather part of a wider shift in mentality to longevity. ¡°It doesn¡¯t matter what my life expectancy is, it doesn¡¯t matter if I die or not,¡± he said. ¡°It¡¯s that we are thematically, objectively, functionally engineering our way to ¡®don¡¯t die¡¯ as a species.¡±
