The most developed sense of the dog

All animals have a more developed sense than the rest. In the case of humans, we mainly depend on sight for our daily lives. However, in the case of dogs it is different. As human beings it is impossible for us to understand their sense of smell since we cannot understand the world through this sense as they do. Their sensory world is impressively different from ours, since they are animals capable of processing a lot of information through chemical messages.

It is the most developed sense they have, and this is due to the 300 million olfactory receptors they have. We, on the other hand, have 6 million, as well as a nasal tissue 30 times smaller than theirs.

A dog's nose in itself is impressively equipped, with more than 220 million odor-detecting cells, compared to our 50 million or so olfactory receptors (at last count).

With this snuffling organ alone, dogs can form spatial awareness, read chemical communications, sense our moods, and track all manner of things, including weak heat sources.

And the part of a dog's brain that is devoted to analyzing smells is about 40 times greater than ours. Dogs also have something called neophilia, which means they are attracted to new and interesting odors.

Dogs possess a sense of smell many times more sensitive than even the most advanced man-made instrument. Powerful enough to detect substances at concentrations of one part per trillion—a single drop of liquid in 20 Olympic-size swimming pools. With training, dogs can sniff out bombs and drugs, pursue suspects, and find dead bodies.

To maximise their ability to smell, dogs increase the speed of their breathing by inhaling and exhaling very quickly, a movement known as ¡°sniffing¡±. In addition, dogs have a good olfactory memory, which allows them to recognise other dogs, even if they have not seen them for years.

Dogs can use their sense of smell to establish temporal sequences: this is because they are able to detect the concentration of odour molecules in the environment. The higher the concentration of molecules, the more intense the odour and the less time has passed since the source of the odour was present. Thanks to this ability, dogs can easily follow the tracks of humans or other animals.

However, they are also capable of detecting fear or anxiety through smell. When we are stressed or scared, we secrete specific hormones such as adrenaline, which can be detected by dogs, although we can¡¯t smell it. Also, when we have anxiety, our heart rate and blood pressure increase, which brings chemicals to the surface of the skin where dogs can smell them more easily, so if you are feeling low, even if nobody seems to notice it, surely your best friend will do.
