An eruption of Taal in January 2020 left communities covered in ash

and prompted hundreds of thousands to be told to evacuate.

Ash rained down on parts of Manila, where the main airport had to temporarily close.

The Philippines lies along the Pacific ¡°Ring of Fire,¡± a region prone to earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. The catastrophic eruption of Mt. Pinatubo in 1991 forced hundreds of thousands of people from their homes and the permanent closure of the United States' Clark Air Base. Pinatubo is about 80 miles north of Taal.
