Although, Though, Even though, In spite of, Despite
모두 "하지만", "그럼에도 불구하고", "비록 ~일지라도"라는 의미를 갖고 있지만, 문장 내에서의 역할이나 뉘앙스에서 조금씩 차이가 존재하죠.
오늘은 이 표현들을 하나씩 파헤치면서, 어떻게 다르고 어떻게 써야 자연스러운 문장이 되는지 정리해 드릴게요.
1. Although / Though
공통점:
접속사(conjunction)로 쓰이며, 뒤에는 완전한 문장이 옵니다.
의미: "비록 ~일지라도", "하지만" 등으로 해석됩니다.
문장 앞이나 중간에 모두 올 수 있습니다.
차이점:
Though는 좀 더 구어체적인 느낌이 강하며, 회화에서 자주 쓰입니다.
Although는 조금 더 격식 있는 문장이나 글쓰기에서 선호됩니다.
Although he was tired, he kept working.
→ 그는 피곤했지만 계속 일했다.
He kept working although he was tired.
→ 그는 피곤했음에도 불구하고 계속 일했다.
Though it was raining, they went hiking.
→ 비가 왔지만 그들은 등산을 갔다.
I liked the movie. Though it was a bit long.
→ 그 영화가 좀 길긴 했지만, 나는 마음에 들었다.
(회화에서는 이런 문장도 자연스럽게 쓰입니다.)
2. Even though
특징:
Although/Though보다 강조의 의미가 있습니다.
즉, "진짜로~임에도 불구하고"라는 강한 역설을 표현할 때 사용됩니다.
역시 접속사로 쓰이며, 완전한 문장이 따라옵니다.
Even though she studied hard, she failed the test.
→ 그녀는 정말 열심히 공부했는데도 시험에 떨어졌다.
I went to the concert even though I was sick.
→ 아팠음에도 불구하고 나는 콘서트에 갔다.

→ 둘 다 맞지만, even though가 더 감정적이고 강한 느낌입니다.
3. In spite of / Despite
공통점:
이 둘은 전치사구(prepositional phrase)로 쓰이며, 뒤에는 명사/동명사가 옵니다.
의미는 "비록 ~에도 불구하고", "그럼에도 불구하고"와 동일합니다.
서로 완전히 바꿔 쓸 수 있으며 큰 의미 차이는 없습니다.
차이점:
Despite는 조금 더 격식 있고 간결한 느낌.
In spite of는 좀 더 구어적이고 약간 더 무겁게 들릴 수 있습니다.
Despite the rain, we went for a walk.
→ 비가 왔지만 우리는 산책을 갔다.
In spite of the pain, he kept running.
→ 통증에도 불구하고 그는 계속 달렸다.
Despite being tired, she finished her work.

잘못된 예:
❌ Although of his effort, he failed.
→ 접속사인 although 뒤에는 명사가 오면 안 됩니다.
❌ Despite he tried hard, he failed.
→ despite는 전치사이므로, 문장(주어 + 동사)이 올 수 없습니다.
올바른 예:
Although he made an effort, he failed.
Despite his effort, he failed.
5. 표현을 바꾸는 실전 팁
